Rueda is a style of salsa where patterns can be danced as a couple, or more commonly, danced in a circle with a caller. The caller gives a combination of hand signals and verbal commands (called in Spanish) telling the dancers which patterns to do. Some patterns called lead the couples to switch partners in intricate movements that weave through the circle.

Rudea was originated in Havana, Cuba in the late 50's-early 60's by a group called Guarancheros de Regla. One of the members of the Guarancheros was Jorge Alfaro, a soloist of a comparsa (a band that plays a conga during Carnival), who was a very instrumental choreogrpher of Rueda.

The names of the moves are primarily in Spanish or Spanglish. Most of the names are consistent across the country now, with little variation, as Rueda has become more popular with lovers of Latin American dancing and salsa.

This style of salsa is a great way to advance your knowledge of salsa and learn new patterns.  You can find Rueda scenes in the movie ‘Dance With Me’ as well as in the music video ‘No Me Dejes De Querer’ by Gloria Estefan.
